Stanley R. “Stan” Akins, aged 90, a resident of Latrobe and previously from Derry, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, at Brookdale Senior Living in Latrobe. Born on September 21, 1934, in Derry, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Andrew P. Akins and Eleanor (Schrum) Akins. A devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Latrobe, Stan was actively involved in the Holy Name Society and the Men’s Bible Study Group. In his retirement years, he dedicated himself to designing and maintaining numerous mini-gardens across Latrobe, earning a reputation for his exceptional skills in growing dahlias and tomatoes. Before retiring in 1993, Stan dedicated 37 years to the Derry Area School District as a teacher, school psychologist, and administrator. His passion for coaching was evident in his 12 years as a football coach. Stan, an alumnus of Derry Borough High School and St. Vincent College, where he played for the “Bearcats,” was honored with the Letterman of Distinction Award by the St. Vincent Alumni Association in 1990.
