Shirley Ardis Abbott, who lived a vibrant 99 years, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, at Brookdale South Windsor. She was the cherished wife of the late Howard G. Abbott, M.D. Born in Watertown, New York, on November 28, 1925, to parents Lucille and Emerson VandeWater, Shirley was affectionately known by her middle name, “Ardis,” to friends and family.

From a young age, Ardis demonstrated a keen aptitude for learning, which led her to pursue and complete a PhD in History at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus. At UConn, she was fondly recognized as the “class elder,” a title she embraced with pride. Her life’s journey, filled with roles as a devoted sister, wife, mother, community leader, and accomplished scholar, is marked by numerous significant milestones and enduring contributions.
