Kathryn Anne Abernathy Tyson, a resident of Nashville, NC, passed away peacefully at her home on February 17, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on March 15, 1945, she was the daughter of Clatie Hobert Abernethy and Pattie Rue Denton Abernethy.
Raised in Nashville, NC, Kathryn graduated from Nashville High School in 1963 and went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Richard, in 1965. She pursued higher education at East Carolina University, earning a degree in Elementary Education. Kathryn spent 12 years nurturing young minds as a kindergarten and 1st-grade teacher at Coopers Elementary School. Following her teaching career, she joined forces with Richard in their agricultural business, taking on roles as a bookkeeper and record keeper. She broke new ground as one of the pioneering women in tobacco marketing.
Kathryn’s life was marked by her roles as a devoted wife and mother, and she was cherished by many as a dear friend. She had a passion for the arts, playing a significant role in the establishment of the Nash County Cultural Center and Arts Council. Kathryn also had a lifelong love for reading, actively participating in several book clubs throughout her years.
