About
Mac McGowan entered this world in 1925 and embarked on a life of service and dedication from a young age. At just 17, he joined the Navy, serving as the “bridge talker” for the captain aboard the USS Reno during World War II. After the war, Mac capitalized on his GI bill benefits to secure an Associate degree in Business, which propelled him into the automotive industry. He initially joined Dothan Lincoln-Mercury, later venturing to own a dealership in Hartford, AL.
His career path took a significant turn when he began selling life insurance for Prudential, a role he committed to for forty-five years. Even in what many would call “retirement,” Mac continued to serve others tirelessly. He volunteered with the Red Cross, led teams with Carpenters for Christ, delivered vehicles for Bill Heard Chevrolet, and spent over a decade managing voter registration for the Columbus, Georgia Consolidated Government until his final retirement in 2023 at the impressive age of 98.
Mac’s life was also rich in family and faith. He was lovingly married to Frances Walker until her passing in 2018. He is survived by his sons, Ken (Sindi), Mark (Paula), and Mike, along with 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom cherish his legacy.
The family respectfully requests that in place of flowers, donations be made to Britt David Baptist Church in Columbus, GA, a place of worship and community that Mac was part of since 1967.
